The following resources may be useful for primary or secondary schools interested in expanding or improving their facilities for Design & Technology.
Developing Creativity in the Foundation Phase, produced by DTIAW (Design Technology Inspectors & Advisors in Wales), is a pack designed for 3-7 year olds including interesting and engaging activities introducing them to the fundamentals of D&T. Through these activities, children will learn practical skills and knowledge which will be very valuable in KS2. This is a ‘starter’ pack. It is not meant to cover provision for a specific section of the Foundation phase, nor indeed a specific age category. The DTIAW have suggested six play activities which cover the range of material experience that children need to work within for D&T at KS2. The included CD-ROM provides you with an electronic version of the three proformas for each of the six play activities in the pack. We hope that you will find these useful in order to develop further play activities within your own school. Although we intend this starter pack to be useful to schools in Wales, we hope that the contents of the pack will also prove a useful resource to our colleagues in England. CAD/CAM - A guide for Secondary Schools is a fully illustrated book containing forward thinking Design and Technology ideas and examples for secondary schools. Graphic Design and outcomes feature strongly throughout the work, starting with 2D and progressing to 3D examples. Projects range in difficulty, exploring topics such as Modellling and Manufacturing using STL files, the role of CAD/CAM in electronics design, and CAD/CAM integration with processes such as vacuum forming and pewter casting. Much of the book is concentrated on exemplified CAD/CAM assignments, however it also includes reflections on pedagogical issues, a review of the key skills embedded in CAD/CAM experiences, as well as helpful hints and resources for the evaluation of D&T standards in schools. There is also an extensive section on exciting and unusual textiles work, featuring dye sublimation and CAM embroidery techniques. The Secondary CAD book even includes a quick review of some key points of different software packages, such as Open Office which is featured on this page. Click here to see an example from the book!
